When Is A Horse Scratched?

In horse racing horse is called a “scratch”  when it  is entered for a race but the connections decide not to run the horse, or a veterinarian determines that the horse is not fit to race.  The term “scratching a horse” came about because bettors would take their pencils and scratch a mark through the horse’s name in their form guide.

How to find that a horse is scratched?

You can easily find that a horse is scratched at the place where you choose to place a bet. For example you can check out all the greyhound, harness and thoroughbred race scratching at TAB bookings Australia online on their site.

What you need to do is to Navigate to Today’s Racing Calendar using the button given there o nthat page.

Click on the SCRATCHINGS button at the top right of the screen to view horse race scratchings.

Once you have clicked on the button, a new screen will open which will show all of today’s race scratchings.

What is a “late scratching”?

A late scratch is a horse that is pulled from the race shortly before the race is scheduled to begin. A late scratching is usually the results of a veterinary decision after an incident at, or on the way to the barrier stalls.

The withdrawal could also be by request of the horses’ trainer. If the trainer scratches a horse late, they may face negative repercussions from the racing commission.

What is Scratch Refund?

If you find your horse that you have place bet upon scratched then generally speaking, all fixed odds bets placed on a scratched runner will be refunded in full.

1. For Parimutuel Tote Betting

  • All bets placed via the internet on scratched runners cannot be cancelled prior to the race.
  • A refund will be deposited into punters or bettors accounts following the payment of final dividends from the running of the relevant race as per the Tabcorp Betting Rules..
  • All multi-leg bets such as Running Double, Daily Double, Quaddie and Big6 will receive the nominated substitute in place of the scratched runner at the jump of the relevant race.
  • Any scratched runner in either leg of a Double will be replaced with a Substitute, and all investments on the scratched runner will be invested on the Substitute.
  • Substitutes will be determined once investments are final and a result has been entered for the race, and will be based on the favourite in the Win pool for that race.
  • A Substitute will be declared for every race, even if there are no scratchings, provided that this race is a Double or a Quaddie leg.

A punter can cancel a scratching affected doubles bet up to the close of selling on the first leg. It does matter what leg (first or second) the scratching is in. Once the first leg is closed, cancellation is inhibited and the substitute automatically replaces the scratching.

2. Retail Bet

  • All single leg bets that have become invalid (do not contain any “live” combinations) due to the scratching of a runner can be cancelled and refunded prior to the start of the relevant race. This is only valid for bets sold on the day of the relevant race and the refund can only be collected from the TAB Retail Outlet that the bet was placed at.
  • For all bets placed at TAB Retail Outlets prior to the day of the relevant race, a refund can be collected at any outlet but only after the race has completed.
  • All multi-leg bets such as Running Double, Daily Double Quaddie and Big6 can be cancelled prior to the start of the first leg of the bet otherwise Customers will receive the nominated substitute in place of the scratched runner.

3. Phone Bet

  • Remember that all bets placed via the phone on a scratched runner cannot be cancelled prior to the race.
  • A refund will be deposited into Customers accounts following the payment of final dividends from the running of the relevant race as per the Tabcorp Betting Rules.
  • All multi-leg bets such as Running Double, Daily Double Quaddie and Big6 will receive the nominated substitute in place of the scratched runner at the jump of the relevant race.

4. Fixed Odds Betting

  • Futures (ALL IN) – All fixed odds bets placed on a scratched runner are not subject to a refund as they are ‘All In’.
  • You will have to refer to the TAB Sportsbet Fixed Odds Betting Rules for your state for more information for  NSW and for VIC.

5. Final Field

All fixed odds bets placed on a scratched runner will be refunded in full.

6. Fixed Odds Doubles Bets

TAB Sportsbet Doubles with a scratched runner into other Final Field races, now become single leg win bets.
