2014 Victoria Derby Tips!

On Saturday, November 1, 2014, the Spring Carnival begins in Melbourne, Australia. This Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race will highlight the first day of this extremely popular week long sporting event. The Victoria Derby will have a field of 16 very strong runners; 5 of which are still maidens looking for their first victory. Only 1 of these 16 horses can cross the finish line first and punters around the world would like to know who will be standing in the winners circle.

The History

The Victoria Derby is a 2500 metres race and will be run at the Flemington Racecourse in the 7th race. This race was first run way back in 1855. Fillies took home the 1st Place Trophy the 1st 3 years of the event, but the Fillie to win the Victoria Derby was Frances Tressady in 1923. Polanski was victorious at the 2013 Victoria Derby. Black and white attire is typically customary for this premier racing event.

2014 Victoria Derby Tips

Out of the 16 horses in the field we have chosen 5 that we feel have the best chance of crossing the finish line first. Let’s review those 5 horses now:

Hampton Court

It is hard to bet against Hampton Court. This Australian horse is a clear favourite with 2.60 odds. He has a record of 3-1-1 in 9 starts. He won the Spring Champion Stakes on October 11th. Hampton Court is an elite horse with plenty of leg to go the distance. Gate draw: 11

Preferment is a horse out of New Zealand. He is one of the 5 maidens in this field and has 6.00 odds. His record is 0-3-1 in 6 starts. He finished 2nd at Geelong on October 22nd. Preferment has been preparing for the Victoria Derby for a long time and hopes to score a win and eliminate the maiden status. Out of the Chris Waller stables there has been some talk as to whether Preferment will wear blinders or not on race day. Gate draw: 6

Moonovermanhattan is another superb runner out of Australia. He has a record of 2-1-0 in 6 starts. He won the Dilmah Exception Teas Vase on October 22nd. He has the distance and the heart to compete down the stretch. He is carrying 8.00 odds. Gate draw: 12

Bondeiger is an Australian horse with 9.00 odds. He has a record of 2-1-1 in 5 starts. Bondeiger is my long shot at winning this race. The training and planning has made this runner a clear favourite for many punters. Gate draw: 1

Magicool is also from Australia and comes in with 21.00 odds. He finished 1st at the Uci Stakes on October 1st. The Magicool training team is hoping this race will be magical for their thoroughbred. Magicool may be a long shot, but he has the ability to surprise. Gate Draw: 16

The Final Word

The Victoria Derby displays some of the most exciting horses and respected trainers in thoroughbred horse racing. It is a great event that should get the Spring Carnival off on the right momentum. For most punters it is difficult to look past the favourite, Hampton Court. Punters are often drawn to their horses for a variety of reasons. Some are profoundly encouraged by the latest statistics, but others go on their gut feeling. Here is hoping that on November 1st you choose wisely and your pick crosses the finish line first.
